Pop-up bookstore · Tampa Bay

MothandLantern

A bookstore that folds up in the back of a car. We set up where you already are, with a shelf of indie and local authors you can actually meet.

What this is

No lease, no landlord, no back room.

Moth and Lantern is a pop-up bookstore. We show up at markets, festivals, fairs, and the occasional parking lot with folding tables, some warm light, and a shelf built one book at a time.

Every title on it came from an author we can reach by phone. Nothing gets stocked because a sales rep put it in a catalog.

Who's on the shelf

  • Black, Indigenous, and authors of color
  • Queer and trans authors
  • Local writers, from around here and one town over
  • Self-published and small-press books that never got a distribution deal

Not a display near the register in June. The whole store, all year.

Five independent authors have trusted us with their work. Here are the first of them — copies arrive soon, and the people on our list hear about it first.

Consigning with us

Four steps, no surprises.

  1. First

You fill out the consignment form. It takes about three minutes and there's no commitment in it.

  2. Then

We talk terms and quantity, and you get a written agreement before a single copy changes hands.

  3. After that

You send an opening batch. Small on purpose — nobody should have a box of unsold books sitting in a back room.

  4. Ongoing

Your book travels with us. We track what sells, tell you before you run out rather than after, and pay out on a set schedule.

Terms, plainly

The part nobody puts on the website.

Consignment agreements are usually vague until you're already invested. Here's ours up front, so you can decide before you've spent an evening on it.
